April Leaman MS, LAPC

April is a proud Lancaster County native with a passion for helping people navigate life’s challenges through connection, trust, and authenticity. She earned her Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from Millersville University in 2009 and has been working in the mental health field since 2003. Throughout April’s career, she has had the privilege of supporting individuals, couples, and families across a variety of clinical and community settings, and believes every person deserves to feel heard, understood, and empowered.

April’s approach to therapy is holistic, collaborative, and tailored to each individual’s unique needs. She works from a strengths-based perspective and primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), while integrating concepts from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) through a trauma-informed lens. Above all, April believes that healing begins with a safe, authentic therapeutic relationship built on trust, compassion, and mutual respect.

April has a special interest in helping individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, complex relationship challenges, life transitions, divorce and separation, and family-of-origin concerns. She also enjoys working with couples and has extensive experience supporting survivors of relational abuse and trauma. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply looking for a space to better understand yourself, April’s goal is to create an environment where you feel accepted without judgment and supported as you move toward meaningful change.

Clients often describe April’s style as warm, genuine, and down-to-earth. She brings empathy, curiosity, unconditional positive regard, and a sense of humor into her work with clients because she believes growth happens when people feel both safe and authentically themselves.

April’s professional experience includes a variety of roles that have shaped her understanding of the many ways people experience healing and resilience, including:

  • School-based wraparound counselor
  • Inpatient psychiatric practicum at Lancaster Regional Medical Center
  • Clinical supervisor in a community-based group home
  • Sexual assault hotline counselor through the YWCA
  • Director of a Women and Children’s Shelter
  • Clinical supervisor for mental health support groups with Mental Health America
  • Graduate Assistant at Millersville University’s Center for Counseling and Human Development

April has completed postgraduate training in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, suicide prevention in LGBTQIA+ youth, cultural competency, leadership development, relational de-escalation, and systems-level approaches to healing and recovery. She holds certifications as a Women’s Mental Health Specialist and a Risking Connections Certified Trauma-Informed Care Trainer, and is a member in good standing with the American Counseling Association. She is also enrolled in an EMDRIA-approved Level 1 and Level 2 EMDR training program as part of her ongoing commitment to providing evidence-based, compassionate care.
